The North Arrow command allows you to insert a north arrow in the layout.

Basic Steps

  3. Click in the layout window to insert a north arrow, drag to change the size, click again to finish.
  4. Modify north arrow properties. Double click the north arrow or right click it and click Properties to display the Properties dialog box for the north arrow. You are allowed to set the rotation angle, width, height, etc. of the north arrow. When modifying the properties of the legend, what you see is what you get.
  5. Map: The map associated with the north arrow.
  6. Select North Arrow: You can choose one from the standard north arrow list or specify a custom picture. The default is standard north arrow.

Standard: 9 types are provided. Check the Standard radio button to enable the drop-down button below. Click the drop-down arrow below and select a north arrow from the list.

Custom Image…: Import a picture in either *.bmp, *.jpg, *.png, or *.gif format as a north arrow corresponding with the current map.

  • Rotation: The rotation angle of the north arrow. The value ranges from -360 to 360 degrees and the unit is 0.1 degrees.
  • Width: The total width of the north arrow.
  • Height: The total height of the north arrow.
  • Extent: The extent of the north arrow. The values in the Top, Bottom, Left and Right text boxes are used to indicate the extent of the bounding box of the north arrow. They are not editable. The values change if the size of the north arrow changes.

Note

  1. You can only add a north arrow to a layout if there is a selected map in the layout and the map is not in focus.
  2. Drawing a north arrow is similar to drawing a geometric object.
