Label Migration

Essential labels on maps are indispensable, not only helping users better distinguish feature elements but also displaying some important attributes of features, such as administrative divisions, roads, rivers, institutions, tourist attractions, contour lines, etc.

ArcGIS Labeling

In ArcGIS, labeling specifically refers to the process of automatically generating and placing descriptive text for map features. It can dynamically label all features in a layer or use labeling classes to specify different labeling properties for features within the same layer. The Label Manager can create and manage labeling classes in a map, as well as view and change the labeling properties and placement positions of all labeling classes in the map.

SuperMap Labeling

In SuperMap, by creating a label thematic map, users can easily implement map labeling, corresponding to labeling in ArcGIS.

A label thematic map is used to label points, lines, and polygons with thematic values (also called tags), such as place names, road names, river grades, widths, etc. In a label thematic map, the display style and position of labels can be set uniformly, or by segmentation, the style of labels within individual or each segment can be set separately.

A label thematic map has the following features:

  • It allows segmented styles for label thematic maps, meaning you can set a segmentation field expression, segmentation mode, and segmentation values to set different styles for feature labels falling within different segmentation ranges;
  • It supports the maximum and minimum values for text scaling, meaning that when the map zooms, the text scales only within the range of the maximum and minimum values.

Support for Label Avoidance Rules

It supports label avoidance rules. During migration, label avoidance rules and display effects will be synchronized.

  • Label Priority: Label priority affects the placement order of labels on the map. Typically, higher priority labels are placed first, followed by lower priority labels. Additionally, lower priority labels that conflict with higher priority labels may be placed in alternate locations or not displayed.
  • Overlap Settings: It supports multiple overlap settings options. For detailed descriptions, please refer to Map Properties - Basic; meanwhile, label thematic maps support effect settings, used to adjust and control the display effects of label objects (text) in label thematic maps. For detailed descriptions, please refer to Label Thematic Map.

Support for Label Placement Properties

When migrating labels for line and polygon features, it supports migrating the minimum feature size for labels from the placement properties of labels. After migration, it becomes the Minimum Object Size in Layer Properties. If a layer contains many small-sized features that do not need labeling and are not very meaningful, use this property to remove them from the list of elements to be labeled.

Label Migration Effect

It supports migrating offset settings. The following is a comparison of the effects before and after migration with offset labels:
