DEM Lake Carving

Feature Description

DEM lake carving has significant application value. Traditional DEM construction methods using point or line data can only represent macro-terrain features, but fail to depict micro-terrain features like lakes, depressions, and glaciers. The DEM lake carving function helps accurately represent these features in DEMs. During the process, it obtains elevation information of lakes or depressions and assigns these values to corresponding DEM cells. For more details, see DEM Construction Overview.

The application provides two approaches for DEM lake carving: 1) Perform lake carving during DEM construction to generate final DEM data with lakes; 2) First construct DEM then perform lake carving operation. For the first method, refer to the Build DEM page. This page focuses on the second approach.
