By creating a new marker symbol library, you can expand point symbols in existing libraries. New point symbols can be either 2D symbols for styling point features in maps, or 3D markers for styling point objects in scenes (which can also style map points). The following sections detail the creation process.
Create a 2D Point Symbol
- Navigate to the target symbol group in the structure tree. New symbols are automatically added to the current path displayed in the selector;
- Click the Edit button in the selector, choose New Symbol->New 2D Point Symbol to open the marker symbol editor;
Requirements: Must specify Symbol ID and Symbol Name. The symbol must contain at least one stroke (non-empty). Click OK in the editor to successfully create the symbol, which will appear in the current symbol list.
- Set symbol attributes (mandatory fields):
- Symbol ID: Unique identifier within the library. Must differ from existing IDs.
- Symbol Name: Display name in the library. Duplicate names are allowed.
- Symbol Origin: Defines the anchor point position in the editing area. This anchor aligns with the geographic point coordinate during symbolization.
- Default Size: Ranges 0-25.5 millimeters. When users set symbol size to 0 in the selector, this default value will be applied.
- Draw graphical content in the editing area:
Example: Click the point drawing button and click anywhere in the editing area to add a point stroke.
- After setting attributes and creating at least one geometry stroke, click OK to complete creation. The new symbol will appear in the current marker symbol library.
To modify existing symbols: Select the symbol in the marker symbol selector and click Edit to reopen it in the editor.
To save new symbols permanently:
- For workspace-embedded libraries: Save the workspace to preserve changes.
- For external files: Export the current library from the marker symbol selector. Subsequent loading of this file will retain new symbols.
Create a 3D Marker
- Navigate to the target symbol group. New symbols are added to the current path in the selector;
- Click Edit in the selector, choose New Symbol->New 3D Symbol;
- The 3D Marker Editor opens (left image below). Click Set Model to browse and import model files (*.3ds, *.x, *.fbx, *.obj, *.stl, *.dae).
Process: First create the 3D model, then import it into the library as a 3D marker.
Note: Imported 3ds files must not exceed 60KB.
- After model selection, preview and configure attributes:
Requirements: Must specify Symbol ID and Symbol Name. Click OK to create the 3D symbol.
- Symbol ID: Unique identifier within the library.
- Symbol Name: Display name (duplicates allowed).
- Scale: Adjust X/Y/Z axis scaling via direct input or slider controls.
- Rotate: Set X/Y/Z rotation angles using input fields or sliders.
- Snapping Setting: Generates thumbnail preview for selector display and map symbolization.
- Click OK to add the 3D marker to the current symbol list.
The 3D Marker Editor's preview area supports comprehensive mouse/keyboard controls for model inspection. For navigation details, see "Preview Area Operations" in 3D Linear Symbol Editor Interface.
