Free Chinese GIS Data Sources

  • National Geographic Information Resource Directory Service System: Maintained by National Geomatics Center of China, provides 1:1,000,000 and 1:250,000 scale national geographic databases, and 30m global land cover data.
  • Geospatial Data Cloud: Operated by Computer Network Information Center, Chinese Academy of Sciences, offers DEM elevation data, LANDSAT series, MODIS series, Gaofen series, and environmental satellite data.
  • Resource and Environmental Science Data Center: Maintained by Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research, CAS, provides thematic datasets including topography, soil vegetation, and watershed data.
  • National Meteorological Science Data Center: Meteorological data sharing platform by China Meteorological Administration, offering surface observations, upper-air data, satellite imagery, and radar data.
  • National Data: Official statistics portal under National Bureau of Statistics, provides annual/quarterly/monthly statistical data and international indicators.

Free International GIS Data Sources

  • Natural Earth: Public domain global dataset supported by NACIS, offering 1:10m/50m/110m scale vector and raster data, including provincial-level administrative boundaries at 1:10m scale.
  • GADM: High-precision global administrative boundaries database with country/province/district levels. Download options: by country or global dataset.
  • USGS Earth Explorer: Comprehensive portal by United States Geological Survey (USGS) providing satellite imagery (Landsat, MODIS), elevation models (ASTER GDEM, SRTM), and geological research data.
